Choice, Co-operation and Compliance

  • 29 Steps

About

This Course explores one of the most important and complex areas of positive reinforcement: how to understand, give, and sometimes withhold choice in a way that builds trust, clarity, and confidence in your horse. The course begins by looking at the importance of giving choice - what it means for horses to have a voice, how they can express themselves, and how we can learn to listen and respond. You’ll explore consent-based training in depth, including how to recognise “yes” and “no” responses and work with them in a respectful, structured way to build a strong foundation of confidence. From there, the focus shifts to building cooperation - helping horses develop the skills to stay engaged even when situations feel uncertain or challenging, such as remaining connected when anxious or choosing to move away from something it wants (like grass) to work with you. This is approached systematically, without force, to develop resilience and willingness. The final section addresses the more nuanced topic of compliance: what to do when a horse needs to do (or not do) something in real-life situations. This part takes a pragmatic, ethical approach to maintaining connection and trust even when compromise is necessary, exploring how to handle these moments thoughtfully within a positive reinforcement framework. Rich with video examples, this course provides a deep and practical understanding of choice-based training and how to apply it in a way that supports both clarity and connection.
