My Story
You love your horse, and you want your time together to feel calm, connected, and comfortable—something you both enjoy.
If you’re exploring positive reinforcement and compassionate training, you may sometimes feel unsure about how to put the pieces together. Perhaps you’ve tried things with the best of intentions, but the results didn’t match what you hoped for, leaving you feeling a bit stuck or discouraged.
If any of that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
Many of the people I work with are thoughtful, caring equestrians who want a relationship built on trust, choice, and mutual understanding—but who also want results that feel reliable and practical. They want to feel safe and confident with their horse, across a variety of situations, and they want their horse to genuinely want to participate, not just comply.
What I offer is individualized guidance to help you and your horse find that place together.
When we work together, the focus is on clarity, connection, and confidence—for both of you. That means learning how to read your horse more clearly, understanding what their behavior is communicating, and shaping skills and building relationship in a way that feels kind, ethical, and effective. We move at a pace that supports learning without pressure, confusion, or overwhelm.
If you’d like to see an quick example, Jen and Koda’s short video (here) shares what can unfold when connection and curiosity guide the process.
I’m Melissa, a Certified Connection Training Coach with decades of experience in the horse world including riding, training and teaching both Dressage and horsemanship for many years. I am also the founder of Compassionate Horse Click. Over the years, my path has led me away from high-pressure approaches and toward training that centers emotional safety, consent, and thoughtful communication. While I once focused heavily on performance, my deepest work now is helping horses and humans feel better together.
Because I understand it so well, I have a particular passion for helping horses and people recover from stressful or damaging training experiences—whether that looks like fear, shutdown, resistance, or loss of confidence on either side of the partnership. I’ve seen, again and again, how much can change when pressure is replaced with clarity and choice.
My own horse, Eclipse, is living proof of what’s possible. Once considered too dangerous to handle or ride, he is now calm, expressive, and an enthusiastic participant in daily life, clinics, and demonstrations. This older video (here) that offers a brief glimpse of some of his earlier life skills developed through positive reinforcement, before we moved on to bareback and bridle-less work. Our heartfelt journey continues to shape how I teach and how I support others.
Whether your goals include groundwork, obstacles, husbandry and cooperative care, trailer loading, riding, or simply enjoying quiet moments together, our work will be tailored to your horse’s individual needs—and to yours. You don’t need to fit into a system. We will build something that works for you – both.
Because I understand that your time and energy are precious — one-on-one coaching can shorten the learning curve and reduce the confusion, frustration, and emotional rollercoaster that often comes with trying to figure everything out on your own. My role is to offer clear guidance, thoughtful feedback, solutions and a supportive space where questions and mistakes (I prefer to call them learning opportunities) are welcome.
If you’re looking for calm, compassionate support—without judgment or pressure—and you’re committed to deepening your relationship with your horse in a way that feels both ethical and practical, I’d be happy to coach you.
